Motherhood is one of the most exciting but terrifying phases of some women’s lives: exciting because children provide endless fun and love and terrifying because it’s hard for new mothers to find some much-needed alone time to relax and enjoy themselves. At such a transitional time, where your body and relationships go through a huge amount of change, it’s important for women to retain a sense of their identity whilst their roles and responsibilities have emphatically changed. For many women who are embarking on motherhood, maintaining their sense of style and their unique sartorial aesthetic provides a source of comfort and consistency: whilst so much might be changing, you can always rely on your eye for style to keep you feeling like, well, you. We’ve looked at three women who embrace the challenges of motherhood with their amazing signature looks.
As the mother to four children whose ages range from 16 to 4, Victoria Beckham has had her hands well and truly full for years. In between trips to Disney world, playing in the garden and taking family holidays, Victoria runs a hugely successful designer label that has captured the attention and hearts of the fashion industry. She is instantly recognisable thanks to her long, slimming lines, looking to midi-length skirts, light-knit jumpers, tapered trousers and loose fitting blazers for her polished, high-fashion look. Comfortable, flattering yet chic, she is the epitome of a woman who is in absolute control of her look, keeping herself uber stylish whether she’s with the children or conquering the world with her label.
Jessica Alba’s sartorial star rose as a young actress thanks to her bohemian, deconstructed style. Now, with two beautiful daughters, she splits her looks into two: for day, she looks to chic utility wear, for example denim jumpsuits, cropped jeans and chiffon shirts, whilst for more polished looks, she can be seen in flowing feminine day dresses and maxi dresses, which are toughened up with a denim shirt or a leather jacket. With such small children, it’s important to opt for looks that are practical and allow plenty of room for movement (playing, carrying and running around). Jessica still works as an actress and is also an astute business woman, co-founding The Honest Company, which sells household products that are all-natural and organic. Therefore, she takes her chic feminine style through to her work-life by pairing her ensembles with blazers or looking to sophisticated, feminine designs from the likes of Kenzo or Oscar de la Renta for the red carpet.
Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova’s career started with something of a Cinderella story when she was discovered selling fruit at a stall in a small Russian town. She went on to conquer the fashion world, walking for many of the top fashion houses, such as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, and she has long been the face of Calvin Klein’s fragrances and denim (shop similar styles at Mary Jane Fashion). Her style consists mostly of her highly designer clothing, looking to prim and pretty ladylike ensembles that use rich textures and clean silhouettes. When hanging out with her brood of young children, however, she opts for more pared back and relaxed styles, including shorts, casual knits and comfortable boots to ensure that she is always light on her feet.
